This is the just-revealed identity for the upcoming XXII Olympic Winter Games that will take place in Sochi, Russia in 2014. Designed by BoscoSport, the “patchwork quilt” concept integrates visual references to various traditional Russian arts and crafts.
This is really busy and not obviously sporty but, when you’re dealing with an event as famous as the Olympics, I don’t think you have to reference sporty clichés. The colors and patterns beautifully represent a rich Russian heritage but still manage to feel contemporary.
I love the way this identity feels very Russian and traditional, yet maintains a visual consistency in the midst of so many different patterns. The acute angles of the diamond shapes serve as an effective echo of the Caucasus Mountains. Plus, in my mind, you pretty much can’t go wrong if you’re doing something fresh and interesting with the quilt vernacular!

So it appears I really am out of touch with this whole quilt thing.
Are we blaming this on the hipsters too?
this is great. i love the quilt reference!
Yeah, I don’t normally say this about graphic design, or anything related to the Olympics, but this is bad-ass! I love it.
Bob, that’s it. We are starting a hipster quilting bee. Maybe a MeetUp? Or a TweetUp? Your choice. We’ve got to get you in touch with the Zeitgeist.
How great to see this. I am in awe and look forward to seeing the quilt theme in the upcoming Olympics. Way to go.

Big, big fan of this.
Me, too! It’s really strong design and, from what I’ve seen, it’s been nicely implemented.
LOVE it! I would like to see it in a Counted Cross Stitch Pattern!
