For as much as I appreciate [some] Modernism, I rarely write about it here. Allow me to attempt to correct that with some Modern eye candy straight out of downtown Detroit, courtesy of Minoru Yamasaki and the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company. One Woodward Avenue is majestic in its Modernity. It’s sleek and impressive, but not cold, at least not from my outside vantage point.
Look at that incredible front desk in the lobby!
From the street, all details, even the railings, echo the same Gothic-inspired geometry.
Seattle-born Minoru Yamasaki moved to NYC after architecture school and is best known for his design of the World Trade Center, completed approximately 15 years after One Woodward Avenue.
