Adorable! Urban Oasis by Ann Schaumburger is a collection of birds and animals tucked into various places inside the 5th Ave./59th St. subway station in Manhattan.
I was rushing out of the train when I spotted this from the corner of my eye. Is that a polar bear? Indeed!
Of course, I had to wander through the station searching for more pieces of this artwork, inspired by the animals and animal statues in the nearby Central Park Zoo.
Durable and sparkly, glass mosaic is used for many subway art installations as part of the MTA’s Arts for Transit and Urban Design program, including City Dwellers, Memories of Twenty-Third Street, Happy City, Losing My Marbles, and The Revelers.
Ann Schaumburger is a NYC-based artist and educator who teaches art at the famous Little Red School House, whose alumni include Zac Posen, Robert De Niro and Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary.

Glad you both like it! Many NYC subway stations feature mosaic art, but this one is especially my favorite.
