Socrates Sculpture Park, tucked away on the riverfront in the Long Island City section of Queens, NY, is the only site in the Metropolitan area specifically dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large-scale outdoor installations in an environment that encourages interaction between artworks and the public.
These are just a few of my favorite sculptures currently on view. Of course I’m a sucker for misplaced chandeliers and large-scale lettering.
Across the street is our old friend, the majestic Office Furniture Wholesale ghost sign:
Beach chairs!
Plastic bags!
Socrates Sculpture Park was an abandoned riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite, when it was transformed in 1986 into an open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for local residents. It’s free, open year-round, and I highly recommend it as a contemporary arts venue.
WOW! Very cool and industrial!

Glad you like it! It’s a bit off the beaten path, and maybe that adds to its appeal.
