A Fake Slum for Luxury Tourists Who Don’t Want to See Real Poverty: meanwhile in Bloemfontein, South Africa…

  1. Its fascinating to me that people will pay thousands of dollars to go to Disney with its walkable streets and touristy shops. But they won’t go downtown in whatever city they live near. The story of slum tourism makes me think of this. People have things close at hand but they’ll pay $$$ for someone else to curate it for them. (Has “curate” jumped the shark yet?)

  2. 5chwar7z, maybe developers and municipal types have taken a cue from Disney, because you see a similar process happening elsewhere, cherry-picking the right retailers for your local “lifestyle center” and, in the city, for the “Gateway Quarter.” More and more places seem curated, and fewer authentic.

Quimbob, those kinds of tours do exist, though sometimes it’s hard to separate one type of fascination from any other. For example, there are tours of Harlem — what’s the appeal? It could be poverty, but it could also be African American culture or musical history.
