Roy’s Motel and Café Ghost Sign in Amboy, CA

Roy's Motel and Café

Roy’s Motel and Café was once a motel, café, gas station, and auto repair shop. Nowadays, it’s a gas station, popular tourist spot and filming location in the ghost town of Amboy in California’s Mojave Desert, located along Route 66.

Roy’s is a moment frozen in time, perfectly in the middle of nowhere. It’s easy to see why the town was used as a location for films like The Hitcher and Kalifornia. We arrived here at the same time as a bus full of German tourists and, while they wandered around and took photos of this incredible piece of Americana, I made a bee line for the restroom.

This is a great example of Googie architecture:

Check out more photos and the history of the town, which is now privately owned.
