Losing My Marbles by Lisa Dinhofer

Losing My Marbles by Lisa Dinhofer

Installed in 2003, Losing My Marbles by Lisa Dinhofer is a glass mosaic installation on several walls of the 42nd St.-Port Authority Bus Terminal subway station. The main wall features a gold trompe l’oeil frame surrounding a black and white tiled floor that serves as the backdrop for the marbles, which seem to be rolling toward the viewer.

I don’t know the artist’s intention behind choosing this content for this specific site, but my theory is that no one enjoys finding themselves in the bleak and confusing Port Authority Bus Terminal, and doing so causes you to lose your marbles, so to speak.

The mosaics on the side walls show multi-colored marbles seemingly floating in space. Dinhofer, a lifelong New Yorker, considers herself an illusionist artist, whose highly spatial work seems believable but is wholly invented.
