The multi-part installation Happy City by Peter Sis depicts the diverse ingredients found in NYC communities. Created with etched stone and glass, the mosaics include landmark buildings near the 86th St. station on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, along with whimsical people and animals.
Above each set of stairs is a highly detailed, large-scale eye. I was only able to photograph two of them.
Peter Sis, born in Brno in then-Czechoslovakia, is best known as a children’s book illustrator, and this public art project includes whimsical elements reminiscent of fairy tales. For more photos and information on Happy City, go here and here.
