Good news for Cincinnati-based lovers of vernacular typography, seekers of fashion jeans and dress slacks, and connoisseurs of check-cashing services — after a fire almost a year ago, Smitty’s is reopening on the Northwest corner of 15th and Vine Sts. in Over-the-Rhine, just up the street from its previous location.
Will the signage for this new storefront ever reach the previous level of typographic cacophony? Personally, I doubt it.
When’s the opening day, and will the store be open on Sundays, as before?
Give him a few years, maybe the fontitude will be just a busy as it was.
One can only hope! I miss the ol’ Times Square of Vine St.
A post as good as seeing the first robin or crocus!
I’m glad that the owner hasn’t given up on his store, and also that Vine St. can continue to accommodate Smitty’s.
Amazingly, that signage retains the character of the original Smitty’s while at the same time it completely replaces tackiness with character.
I hope the new Smitty’s will be a beacon, letting people know that new people coming to OTR does not mean longtime residents must leave.
There is some justice in this world.
Let the gaudiness resume.
