Havana-based Los Carpinteros is the art collective of Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés and Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez. Free Basket is their recently installed project in 100 Acres, the just-opened sculpture park at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, along with Bench Around the Lake by Jeppe Hein and Eden II by Tea Mäkipää.
Using the form of a basketball court and seemingly tracing the trajectories of a ball with brightly painted steel arcs, the sculpture is a kind of strange playground that doesn’t function for a game of basketball but could potentially be used for other games, or maybe for skateboarding.
This project is obviously a reference to the importance of basketball to Indiana, but could the red and blue arcs also be a nod to shifting politics in the state?
In any case, this little boy is clearly not impressed. Why can’t he just shoot some hoops? Damn artists… Boom baby!

Hoosiers are stupid if they think this “public artwork” isn’t mocking them.
I disagree. I think Free Basket manages to touch on something that’s locally important without making fun of it or seeming to pander to the audience.
