Born in Reykjavik and now living in NYC, Katrín Sigurðardóttir is a sculptor and installation artist who has teamed up with Artware Editions for the release of these limited-edition lamps. The shades depict scenes of Ísafjörður, a remote village in Northwestern Iceland.
You can purchase these lamps via Artware Editions for $2000 each, or $5500 for a set of three.
Another place-centric lighting project that I’ve written about is the perforated lighting by Elsa Somano, which achieves a similarly ethereal effect through very different means.
The more I look at the images above, the less convinced I am of the generic, utilitarian design of the bases. I think the imagery may be more effective on a large drum pendant shade, or a table lamp with a less visible base. Oh, well, I’m nitpicking.
