Self-taught artist Bill Guffey is based in Burkesville, KY, but he uses Google Street View to virtually visit the sites of his “plein air” landscape paintings. Technology enables him to “travel” to locations he will never physically visit.

The pairs above are: Lisbon, Portugal, Auvers, France, and NYC, USA. For more information on Guffey and his work, check out his site, his blog, and the article Vincent Van Google: Artist Uses Street View Website to Travel the World Virtually.

Another interesting project that uses Google Street View is Street with a View by Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley, which was a series of performances documented within the virtual world of the gathered Street View imagery.

  1. The paintings impress me less than the use of technology does. But, it is amazing how much more attractive the scenes are in the paintings than in the photos.

  2. I think you’re both being too harsh. These paintings are so charming, and I love that he’s using technology in a new way to do something so untechnological.
