As part of my ongoing fascination with Iceland, I’ve been looking at the work of some of its artists and designers. Long before Wallpaper* magazine became obsessed Reykavik’s nightlife, this isolated country was quietly nurturing its stable of artists, and Þórarinn B. Þorláksson was one of the first to receive Iceland’s official accolades and support.

Þorláksson trained as a bookbinder and later studied painting under Copenhagen-trained Icelandic artist Thóra Thoroddsen. He then received a government grant to study painting in Denmark and, upon his return, his work was shown in the first-ever exhibit of Icelandic paintings held in Iceland [in a venue in Reykavic named Glasgow!]. Þorláksson specialized in landscape painting and represented the desolate landscape through an Icelander’s eyes.
