Stratum Pier by Richmond, VA-based Kendall Buster is an emerald green fiberglass and steel pier whose undulating, repeating forms seem to suggest a topographical map. It is one of the many public artworks on display at 100 Acres, the new sculpture park at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, along with Free Basket by Los Carpinteros, Bench Around the Lake by Jeppe Hein and Eden II by Tea Mäkipää.

Looking through the gridded layers actually has a bit of a dizzying effect.

I’m a sucker for things that are both beautiful and functional, expressive and utilitarian. This sculptural pier definitely fits the bill.
Interestingly, this was my least favorite piece in the park. It gave me bad flashbacks of milk crates.
See, I like the fact that it evokes milk crates, because that lowly reference is then transcended by the design and construction. I think that’s kind of cool.
