Ice House Detroit by artists Gregory Holm and Matthew Radune is an installation that brings attention to the current “freeze” in the housing market by encapsulating an abandoned house in a layer of solid ice. Detroit is currently leading the nation in foreclosures, with 80,000 abandoned homes in the city. The artists have purchased this house from the city for this project.

After completion of this project, the artists plan to work with groups who will deconstruct the house, recycling the wood, metals, glass, and the cement foundation. Once the house is demolished, the property will be donated to local urban farmers for the cultivation of neighborhood vegetables.

Wonder what the inside looks like. Too bad they couldn’t have conned Bombay into sitting inside while they iced it up.
Beautiful, haunting, timely and useful. An art ‘win’.
