People Will Always Need Plates

The studio of Hannah Dipper and Robin Farquhar, a.k.a. People Will Always Need Plates, uses “high quality, low volume batch production to create witty, thoughtful and stylish products as a direct antithesis to the current proliferation of cheap, throwaway design.”

The studio’s products include plates, mugs, pillows, jumpers, and skirts, depicting architectural subjects such as Modern villas in London, Trellick Tower, Barbican, Liverpool icons, and Modern seaside villas. Commissions have included the Hayward Gallery, Midland Hotel, 20th Century Society, Royal Festival Hall, and the Tinsley Cooling Towers.

  1. I just don;t see serving mashed potatoes on top of some brutalist architecture, or wrapping a cute little girl in it either. The coffee mug, and pillows? sure.

  2. I think the plates and pillows have a wry quality about them, but the toddler dress is just odd. Is she enjoying the design?

  3. Sheesh, I’d rather dress my toddler in architecture than in the myriad cartoon-branded wares that are out there. If the print on the dress were a catalyst for conversation with the kid, it’d be a much more interesting conversation than, say, discussing the finer points of Hannah Montana or Snow White or what have you.

My favorites among these are the plates because of the way the buildings are applied to the entire surface, versus the colored circles in the centers. It’s a graphically clever application of the design to the object.

  4. I love that little dress!
Because of the dress or the girl cuse she’s so cute?
    NAW! love the dress.
I know a soon to be birthday girl, but I looked at the website, some assembly required. FAIL.

  5. The dress is freaking cute, as is the Lilliputian model.
