Louise Nevelson Sculpture in Downtown Cincinnati

Sky Landscape II is a 3,800-pound, 20-foot tall painted steel sculpture by Louise Nevelson located at the 8th & Walnut Street entrance to the Main Branch of the Cincinnati Public Library. I really love the ways in which it interacts with its surrounding buildings. Each viewing angle yields new juxtapositions.

Andrea Cobb for Portal Publishing

I’m still reeling from last Sunday’s obscene spectacle, and the work of Andrea Cobb is the perfect antidote — so fresh and so clean. A North Carolina native, Andrea trained at Parsons in NYC and, after a decade in the big city, she is now again based in NC. Her clients have included Target, American Express, United Airlines, Chronicle Books, and, oh, Cincinnati Magazine.

Enjoy Your Weekend: tons going on this weekend, mostly artsy-fartsy stuff in Over-the-Rhine.

Blog of the Month: Queen City Survey: Dan of Queen City Survey is interviewed by CINWeekly, with shout-outs to March[itecture] Madness and Rutherford B. Hayes.

I Didn’t Go to High School Here, All Right?!: crazy talk from one Adam Singer.

Luxury Single-Family Home in Highland Park, Illinois: the house from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is on the market [for less than the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat was a year ago].

Street Sleeper: “Cummfy Banana offers alternative sightseeing in a motorised four-poster bed with top-speeds of 70 mph. Lazy London tourists can take it very easy indeed.”

Mid Century Modern Home Plans : illustrations from Second Homes for Leisure Living via the incomparable Grain Edit.

100 Abandoned Houses: oh, Detroit…

Indianapolis 500

Dirty, densely populated, with inadequate resources, some displays of shocking behavior, and plenty of excitement — sounds like a city, doesn’t it? The Indianapolis 500 really is a daylong pop-up city, and the guesstimated attendance of half a million makes it a much, much larger one than Cincinnati.

The Big Pig Gig

Today marks the three-year anniversary of my arrival in Cincinnati. Three years ago to the day, we pulled up to the gates of the compound in a U-Haul that contained all of our material possessions. Thus began a surprising adventure in the Queen City that taught us more, and has been much more compelling, than we could have imagined, and certainly more so that we’d expected. A keen sense of expectation management has yielded a life that is quite enjoyable and satisfying.

Eyes Behind the Enquirer mural in downtown Cincinnati

This mural is on the back of a building directly behind the Enquirer Building in downtown Cincinnati. These shots were taken from the alley. I like thinking that the eyes are watching the Cincinnati Enquirer to ensure justice and impartiality. I’m making that up, of course; I have no idea. Anyone know the story behind this?

Enjoy Your Weekend: tons of reasons to hang out downtown this weekend!

So Maybe the Slackers Had It Right After All: “We moved to San Francisco and Brooklyn and Mission Hill. We jumped from job to job. Put off marriage. Never bought a place… We’ve got no house to lose, no career to dash, no school-aged children in need of pricey Wii gaming systems.”

Brooklyn Residents Voice Complaints over Ice Cream Jingles: “Let’s take back McCarren Park from the ice-cream vendors… they are young, rude and ruthless… terrorize everybody with their jingle…” Hilarious!

What’s in an American Name?: filled with fun facts, such as that Winnebago means “person of dirty water” in Algonquin; via Cincinnati Revisited.

The Luxury City vs. the Middle Class: the Creative Class, aging Boomers, YPs, and the humble Middle Class.

Frank Lloyd Wright LEGO Sets: details of the release of LEGO versions of Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum. Wow!

Artistic Tanks: oil, propane, water, and awesome.
